The project

Challenge

As part of the implementation of the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), Gothaer determined that its rating and quoting systems (CPQs) based on Google Web Toolkit (GWT) do not meet the mandated security requirements.

Five CPQ systems with a total of 12 products had to be migrated to Vue.js and Spring Boot and had to go live within one year. All functions were to be maintained 1:1, while simultaneously aligning the user interface with the current Gothaer standard.

Solution

Following a thorough analysis of the existing system, a strategy based on mocking and regression testing was chosen, in which all interfaces to peripheral systems were encapsulated and simulated.

This enabled development to be independent of time and infrastructure constraints, allowing for fast feedback cycles while migrating the numerous existing input masks and their underlying logic.

Building on the existing Gothaer Vue.js component library, we manually ported all frontend code from GWT to Vue.js. This allowed us to implement modern best practices while simultaneously incorporating the client's specific developer guidelines.

The modernization from JBoss to Spring Boot relied heavily on refactoring. To restructure the interface between the frontend and backend, we replaced the GWT-RPC mechanism with OpenAPI, thereby ensuring type safety within the client.

In bitside, we found the perfect partner for our project - migrating insurance quoting systems to a modern technology stack. Despite an ambitious schedule, the project results were delivered with outstanding quality and ahead of the planned timeline. In addition to their exceptional technical and domain expertise, the collaboration was characterized by an empathic, reliable, and proactive approach.
